Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Damper Repair: The Virginia Beach Owner’s Guide
DuraFlex damper repair in Virginia Beach typically runs $280-$450 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the plate, the frame, or the full assembly. We stock DuraFlex-compatible damper hardware on every truck, and most replacements are finished in a single visit. Most homeowners figure out something’s wrong when they feel a cold draft blowing down the flue in January, or when smoke spills into the living room on the first fire of the season because the damper won’t open fully.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex produces damper assemblies across several liner and chimney product lines, and the part you need depends on when your system was installed and which series was specified. The DuraFlex SW and DuraFlex HT models use different throat dimensions and handle geometries, so a plate from one won’t seat properly in the other. If your damper has a stamped model number, it’s usually on the handle bracket or the top edge of the frame, visible from the firebox with a flashlight.
We carry both OEM DuraFlex replacement dampers and quality aftermarket equivalents from Copperfield and Famco that meet the same ASTM and UL standards. For most Virginia Beach homes built between 1995 and 2010 with a DuraFlex liner retrofit, the aftermarket frame-and-plate assembly fits without modification and carries the same ten-year warranty on materials. The exception is the DuraFlex Pro series, which uses a proprietary locking handle that only matches the OEM part. Russell Haines has measured enough of these to know the difference by sight, and we’ll tell you before we order anything.
Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing
- Cold downdraft even when the damper is “closed.” The plate has warped or the frame has rusted at the seal edge, letting outside air leak past. In Virginia Beach, the salt air off the Atlantic accelerates this corrosion compared to inland markets.
- The handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. The linkage pin has sheared or the cotter pin has corroded through. This is the most common mechanical failure we see in DuraFlex dampers after fifteen years of service.
- Smoke rolls into the room on start-up. The plate is stuck partially open, or it’s come off the linkage entirely and is sitting crooked in the throat. Either way, the flue can’t establish proper draft.
- You hear metal scraping or grinding when operating the handle. The frame has shifted or the plate has deformed from heat cycling, and the two are making contact. Continuing to force it will oval the frame and turn a repair into a full replacement.
- Visible rust flakes or orange staining on the firebrick below the damper. The frame is deteriorating from the inside out. In coastal Virginia, we’ve seen this start as early as twelve years on a DuraFlex damper that faced the prevailing wind.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard DuraFlex damper replacement in Virginia Beach, here’s how the pricing breaks down:
- Damper plate only: $280-$340
- Frame-and-plate assembly: $340-$420
- Full throat rebuild with new DuraFlex-compatible frame: $420-$450
These figures include the part, labor, and our Level-2 camera inspection before and after so you see the seal for yourself. What drives the range is access, how much of the old hardware has to come out, and whether the firebrick needs touch-up work once we’re in there. We give you the full number before we start. The 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation in writing, no arguing. If it doesn’t seal, we come back.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s a hard stop. You can verify the model number, check the handle linkage for obvious corrosion, and confirm whether the plate moves freely. What you should not do is climb into the firebox or reach up the flue to manipulate a stuck damper plate. The edges are sharp, the soot is carcinogenic, and a dislodged plate can drop on your head or hand. The spring tension on some DuraFlex handle assemblies is enough to pinch or cut.
We’ve also seen homeowners buy the wrong part online, force it in, and end up needing the frame replaced too. A square deal means getting it diagnosed correctly the first time. Call (757) 573-9998 and we’ll sort out what you actually need.
FAQs
Expect 15 to 25 years, with the lower end more common within a few miles of the coast where salt air gets into the chimney chase. In neighborhoods like Linkhorn Park or Great Neck, we’ve replaced dampers at eighteen years that were still sound in inland Virginia Beach homes of the same vintage. Call (757) 573-9998 for an exact quote - estimates are free.
Sometimes. A sheared linkage pin or cotter pin can be replaced if the plate and frame are still sound and sealing properly. If the frame is rusted or the plate is warped, repair is a temporary fix that costs more in the long run. We’ll show you the camera footage and tell you which side of that line you’re on.
Most DuraFlex damper replacements take 90 minutes to two hours from ladder set-up to final photo. If we need to remove surrounding firebrick or the throat is tight, it can stretch to three hours. Either way, it’s typically a single visit.
We stock DuraFlex-compatible dampers, plates, and hardware on every truck, along with HeatShield and Gelco equivalents for systems where cross-compatibility applies. Hearthstone Chimney Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with DuraFlex, and we source parts based on what fits your system correctly, not what brand is on the box.
The flue either drafts right or it doesn’t - there’s no in-between worth living with. If your DuraFlex damper is giving you trouble, call (757) 573-9998. A live person answers 24 hours a day, we’ll give you a straight price before we book the work, and we’ll be there when we say.
