Copperfield Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Damper Repair: The Virginia Beach Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Copperfield-compatible damper repair assemblies in Virginia Beach, with most jobs running $280-$520 installed depending on whether we’re replacing the plate, the frame, or the full throat-mount unit. Parts are on our trucks and we can typically inspect, match, and complete the repair in a single visit. Homeowners usually notice the problem first as a draft they can’t shut off, a stuck handle, or a rattling plate that won’t seat flat anymore.

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield dampers fall into two main lines we see in Virginia Beach homes: the traditional cast-iron throat dampers (series 1000 through 3000, identifiable by the raised “CF” logo and a four-digit casting number on the frame edge) and the lighter stamped-steel models (series 5000 and up, marked with a two-letter date code). The throat units measure 8″ × 8″ up to 16″ × 20″ and require a precise frame-to-flue match; the 5000-series uses a standardized pivot pin that looks universal but isn’t - the Copperfield pin is 3/16″ diameter where most aftermarket replacements run 1/4″, and that difference will bind the pivot after two heating seasons.

We carry both OEM Copperfield plates and frames and a quality aftermarket line from Olympia Chimney that meets the same ASTM A48 spec for cast iron. For stamped-steel units in coastal Virginia Beach, where salt air accelerates surface rust, we typically recommend the OEM replacement; the metallurgy holds up better long-term. We match the part to your model before we leave the shop, so we’re not guessing on your time.

Signs Your Copperfield Damper Repair Is Failing

  • The handle turns but the plate doesn’t move. The linkage pin has sheared or the cotter key has corroded through. This is common in Virginia Beach homes within two miles of the water, where salt air gets down the flue during shoulder seasons.
  • You feel cold air dropping even when the damper is “closed.” The plate has warped from heat cycling or the frame seat has eroded with creosote buildup. A 1/8″ gap around a 12″ plate is roughly the same as leaving a 4″ window cracked.
  • The plate chatters or rattles when the wind blows. The pivot bushings are worn oval, or the counterweight has slipped on its set screw. Left alone, this will eventually drop the plate open mid-fire.
  • You see rust flakes or orange staining on the firebrick below. The damper frame is corroding from the top down, usually where condensate pools on the frame ledge. In Virginia Beach’s humid climate, we’ve seen this advance from surface to structural in three to four years.
  • The handle is stuck completely and won’t budge. Either the plate has dropped off its pivot and jammed catty-corner, or the frame has shifted with settling and is pinching the plate edge. Forcing it will crack the cast iron.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Repair Type Typical Range What’s Included
Damper plate replacement (OEM Copperfield) $280-$380 Plate, gasket, linkage hardware, labor, camera inspection
Full frame and plate replacement $420-$520 Frame, plate, refractory sealant, labor, camera inspection, photo report
Stuck/jammed damper extraction (no parts) $180-$240 Disassembly, cleaning, reassembly if salvageable, camera inspection

What drives the range: accessibility (some Virginia Beach ranchers from the 1970s have tight fireboxes), whether the frame is mortared in or bolted, and whether we find secondary issues like a cracked smoke shelf. We price upfront before any work starts. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. Every damper repair carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise - in writing, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list of things a homeowner can safely check: whether the handle set screw has loosened (tighten with a flathead), whether debris is blocking the track (vacuum carefully with the fire cold), and whether the linkage is visibly disconnected. Beyond that, damper work involves working overhead in a tight firebox, often with corroded fasteners that require impact drivers and extraction bits. The cast-iron plate weighs 15-25 pounds and has no graceful way to drop.

We don’t recommend DIY frame replacement. The throat opening must be sealed with proper refractory material to maintain clearances, and an improperly seated frame can obstruct the flue or create a carbon monoxide path into the living space. We’ve been called to correct DIY attempts in Virginia Beach homes, and it’s never cheaper the second time. Call (757) 573-9998 and we’ll match the part, install it right, and document the repair with photos you can keep.
