Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Virginia Beach Owner’s Guide

Gelco chimney cap installation in Virginia Beach typically runs $340-$680 for most single-flue models, including removal of the old cap, precise fitting to your flue tile or crown, and a water-tight seal. We stock the common Gelco sizes on our trucks and can usually complete the job in one visit. Most homeowners realize their cap has failed during or after a coastal storm, when water starts showing up on the firebox floor or they spot rust streaks running down the brick.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco caps break down into a few distinct series, and getting the match right matters more than you’d think. The Model A line covers standard single-flue clay tiles from 8″ × 8″ up to 13″ × 13″ - you’ll find the stamped size on the underside lip of your existing cap if it’s still legible. The Model B series handles larger square and rectangular flues, including the 13″ × 18″ common on 1970s-1980s Virginia Beach colonials around Linkhorn Park and Kings Grant. The Model C multi-flue caps mount to the crown itself rather than clamping to the flue tile, which changes both the measurements and the anchoring method entirely.

Here’s where owners get tripped up: Gelco’s clamp-on caps use a screw-tight band system that requires a specific band diameter. Measure the outside of your flue tile, not the inside opening. A 9″ × 9″ interior flue often takes a 10.5″ or 11″ exterior band, and guessing wrong means a second trip. We carry both OEM Gelco bands and premium aftermarket equivalents from Copperfield that meet the same 24-gauge galvanized spec. Hearthstone Chimney Co. is an independent service provider - not affiliated with Gelco - so we source what fits and lasts, not what moves through a particular distribution channel.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Water on the firebox floor after rain. The cap’s mesh screen or lid has separated at the seam, or the corner welds have cracked from years of thermal cycling. Virginia Beach’s salt air accelerates this - we see it start around year 8 on galvanized caps closer to the Oceanfront.
  • Rust stains running down the chimney face. The cap’s base ring or band is corroding through, usually at the lowest point where condensation pools. Once rust bleeds through the galvanized coating, the metal thins fast.
  • Mesh sides bowed outward or detached. High winds off the Chesapeake or a nor’easter have stressed the screening beyond its frame. Gelco’s 5/8″ mesh is sturdy, but a direct hit from a loosened tree branch will deform it.
  • Cap sitting crooked or loose on the flue. The tightening band has corroded, or the masonry itself has spalled where the band grips. This is common on 1960s-1970s chimneys in Princess Anne where the flue tile lip has eroded.
  • Animals or debris in the flue. The cap is missing entirely, or the mesh has rotted out large enough for squirrels, starlings, or nesting material to pass. We pulled a full blackbird nest from a Thoroughgood chimney last March - the cap had been gone two winters, the owner hadn’t noticed.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Scope Typical Range
Single-flue Gelco cap, standard size (8″ × 8″ to 13″ × 13″) $340-$480
Oversized or multi-flue Gelco Model C, crown-mounted $520-$680
Flue tile repair or band seat rebuilding (if spalled) $180-$340 additional
Stainless steel upgrade from galvanized $90-$140 additional

What drives the range: accessibility (steep roof pitch, two-story height), whether the old cap is seized and needs cutting off, and if the flue tile itself needs attention before the new cap seats properly. We photograph the condition before we quote - you’ll see what we see, and the number we agree to is the number on the invoice. Every cap installation carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it leaks, shifts, or doesn’t fit square, we come back. No paperwork to dig up, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list of things a homeowner can safely verify from the ground: confirming the cap is actually present, spotting obvious rust streaks, and checking whether the cap sits level. Binoculars help. What you cannot safely do is climb a Virginia Beach roof with a 6/12 pitch or steeper, work near a chimney stack with nothing but asphalt shingles for footing, or wrestle a seized band clamp while balanced on a ladder. The cap itself is not high-tension dangerous, but the fall risk is real, and a poorly seated cap channels water straight into your flue - worse than no cap at all.

We bring the right band sizes, the sealant rated for 400°F flue gas contact, and the ladder setup that doesn’t end with a call to the ER. Most Gelco swaps take under 90 minutes once we’re on site. Call (757) 573-9998 - a live person answers, even at 10 PM on a Sunday.
