Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation: The Virginia Beach Owner’s Guide

An Olympia Chimney chimney cap installed in Virginia Beach typically runs $340-$620 depending on flue size, cap style, and whether the existing flue tile needs repair before mounting. We stock Olympia Chimney-compatible caps in 8″, 10″, and 13″ round as well as common rectangular sizes for their 600-series and Pro-Select lines, and most replacements are completed in a single visit. If you’re seeing rust streaks down your chimney chase or hearing flapping during a nor’easter, the cap is likely failing and letting water into places it shouldn’t.

Which Olympia Chimney Models This Applies To

Olympia Chimney manufactures several cap configurations, and matching the right one matters more than you’d think. Their 600-series stainless caps fit standard clay flue tiles from 8″ to 13″ round, while the Pro-Select line uses bolt-down mounting brackets designed specifically for their factory-built chimney systems. The Pro-Select caps carry a slightly wider overhang, which matters in Virginia Beach because our driving rains come sideways off the Atlantic.

We carry both OEM Olympia Chimney caps and equivalent-grade aftermarket units from Gelco and Famco. The aftermarket caps match spec for spec, and we often recommend them when the original mounting flange is still sound. If your cap came with a Pro-Select system, check the stamped model number on the collar - it usually reads “PS-” followed by the flue diameter. For 600-series caps, look for the laser-etched size marking on the underside of the lid. Getting this wrong means a cap that either leaks or blows off in the first strong wind.

Hearthstone Chimney Co. is an independent service provider with no affiliation to Olympia Chimney. We source their caps through standard HVAC supply channels and install them to manufacturer spec.

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Rust stains on the chase or roof shingles. Olympia Chimney caps use 304 stainless in their standard line, but the coastal salt air in Virginia Beach accelerates corrosion at the welded seams. Once rust appears, the cap is already compromised and water is getting past the lid.
  • Flapping or rattling during wind. The mesh screen has detached from the frame, or the mounting bolts have backed out. Either way, the cap is no longer secured and can become a projectile in a storm.
  • Water in the firebox after rain. This means the cap’s lid is cracked, the seam has split, or the wrong size was installed with gaps around the flue tile. Water pooling on the smoke shelf leads to liner damage and expensive repairs down the line.
  • Birds or squirrels in the flue. The mesh sides have corroded through or the cap blew off entirely. Animals build nests that block draft and create fire hazards. We remove them humanely and install a proper cap the same day.
  • Draft problems or smoke backup. A cap with clogged mesh restricts airflow, especially on shorter chimneys common in ranch-style homes near Kings Grant and Thoroughgood. The fire needs oxygen; a blocked cap starves it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Price Range
Olympia Chimney-compatible cap (standard 304 stainless) $180-$290
Pro-Select or heavy-gauge equivalent $260-$380
Installation labor & mounting hardware $160-$240
Flue tile repair or resurfacing (if needed) $120-$280
Total installed $340-$620

The price spread depends on three things: cap material grade, whether we need to fabricate a custom adapter for an oversized or irregular flue, and if the flue tile itself has spalling or cracks that need repair before the new cap can seat properly. We photograph everything and show you before we proceed. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. Our 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation in writing, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely check whether the cap is loose by sight from the ground or a steady ladder at gutter height. Look for tilting, missing bolts, or visible gaps. Do not climb onto the roof if you’re unsteady, if the pitch is steep, or if the shingles are wet. Falls from roof height are the leading cause of serious injury in home maintenance.

Installing the cap itself is where DIY goes wrong. The mounting requires proper torque on stainless hardware, correct spacing above the flue opening to maintain draft, and a bead of high-temp sealant that won’t degrade in our Virginia Beach humidity. We’ve found caps installed upside-down, caps bolted through the flue tile causing cracks, and caps with mesh so fine they suffocate the fire. The flue either drafts right or it doesn’t - there’s no in-between worth living with.

Our technicians carry Olympia Chimney-compatible caps on the truck, background-checked and uniformed. Most jobs finish in one visit. Call (757) 573-9998 for a free estimate.
